Taiwan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development concluded a letter of intent Dec. 2 in London to assist the EBRD’s new countries of operations in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
According to the MOFA, the pact was signed by Vincent Yao, head of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K., and EBRD Vice President Mark Bowman during the Donors’ Day at EBRD headquarters. It aims to partner with countries in the region on areas such as digital technology, small and medium enterprise development and green innovation in the spirit of “Taiwan Can Help,” the ministry added.
Yao said Taiwan is proud to be a long-standing and reliable partner of EBRD in its expansion into new regions. SSA countries have enormous potential, and Taiwan is ready to contribute where it can, he added.
During the strategic dialogue session held the same day, the two sides reviewed recent achievements and explored ways for Taiwan to leverage its expertise in information communication technology, cybersecurity, smart mobility, financial services and green infrastructure to support EBRD partner countries in enhancing supply chain resilience and accelerating digital transformation.
Taiwan is an important EBRD partner and its seventh-largest donor. Since its establishment in 2006, the Taiwan Business-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund has financed more than 400 EBRD technical cooperation projects, as part of government economic diplomacy and of benefit to both sides, the MOFA added.
